Bomani Jones has questioned the notion that Sean McVay possesses a unique ability to develop quarterbacks into elite, championship-caliber players. While McVay has worked with several quarterbacks who have seen statistical success, including Kirk Cousins, Jared Goff, and Matthew Stafford, Jones argues there is insufficient evidence to support the claim that McVay can transform quarterbacks into Super Bowl winners.
Jones points to the lack of a Super Bowl victory under McVay's leadership as a key factor in disputing the 'quarterback whisperer' label. Although McVay led the Rams to a Super Bowl win in the 2021 season, the quarterback for that victory, Stafford, had already established himself as a top-tier NFL starter prior to joining McVay's system. Jones suggests that McVay's offensive schemes may elevate player performance, but that does not necessarily equate to proven quarterback development on the highest stage.
